Duplicate bridge · Every Tuesday
Grimsby Bridge Players Association
A friendly club for the card game. We meet at the Colt Suite, Grimsby Golf Club, from 6:45pm until 10:00pm. The social side comes before the need to win. Every pair still tries.
The game
Four people, fifty-two cards, one table.
Bridge is a partnership card game. You and your partner sit opposite each other and play the other pair. It sits a step on from whist or solo. Once the basics settle, it can be enjoyed at any level, in the same way golf can.
There is a recognised rule book from 1886. Over the years it has been played by Mahatma Gandhi, Bill Gates, Dwight Eisenhower and Omar Sharif, and on the page by James Bond and Sherlock Holmes.
Rubber and duplicate
At home, people often play rubber bridge, with a fresh deal every hand. At the club we play duplicate, also called contract bridge. The same hands are played at every table, so your result is compared with the other pairs who held those cards.
Bring a partner
Bridge is played in pairs, so two of you need to come. If you are looking for someone to sit opposite, ring or email and we will see what we can do.
- Contract
- The bid you promise to make: how many tricks, in which suit.
- Trick
- Four cards, one from each player. The highest card of the suit led usually wins it.
- Dummy
- After the auction, one partner’s cards go down on the table for everyone to see.
- Duplicate
- The same deal is played at each table, so the comparison is the play.
Members go on bridge holidays around the UK and abroad. Organisers can find you a partner, and you play as much or as little as you want. Four people can play anywhere. Members of this club have even played on a handrail in Alaska, waiting for a float plane.
Learn
Learn the game, then take a seat on Tuesday.
We run an easy-paced beginners course from time to time, in the Colt Suite at Grimsby Golf Club. It is open to anyone, whether you have played bridge before or not.
A little experience of other card games helps. Whist or solo is an advantage. Neither is required. People of any age play, and you can learn the shape of the game in a few weeks. The finer points can occupy a lifetime. Members will tell you it gets hold of you.
Ring 01472 841148 or email john@vixonservices.co.uk to ask when the next beginners course starts, and what it costs.
